In response to the statement the National Trust is “a charity, not a political organisation”, Mr Parker acknowledged the Black Lives Matter had garnered a lot of attention in recent times, but clarified the Trust is not a member of the group and that the movement was merely “a reflection of our belief we should not have a society that is racist”.

Mr Parker added: “I personally have got no enthusiasm for looking back at the distant past and judging it from the point of view of the 21st Century.

“I do want to reassure members that our focus is keeping our collections going.

“I hope, as time goes by, you will see that in no way the Trust has become a political organisation that has been taken over by a bunch of woke folk or anything of that nature.”
