Winds of Winter release: George RR Martin may be finished soon as writing for months | Books | Entertainment

Last month, A Song of Ice and Fire author George RR Martin gave fans an update on The Winds of Winter his blog. The 72-year-old reassured that he was self-isolating “given my age and physical condition.” He wrote: “But I feel fine at the moment, and we are taking all sensible precautions.”

The Game of Thrones creator continued: “I am off by myself in a remote isolated location, attended by one of my staff.

“And I’m not going into town or seeing anyone.”

Some people took this to mean that he decided to move to the cabin due to coronavirus.

However, ASOIAF expert and insider BryndenBFish has clarified that Martin has in fact been there for months writing The Winds of Winter.

In another blog post, just a week ago, Martin wrote of his sadness that WorldCon New Zealand was being cancelled and replaced by a virtual experience.

Last year the author had said how he intended on travelling to the sci-fi convention and made the July 29, 2020 start his personal deadline for having The Winds of Winter in his hands.

Whether he meant actually published or in manuscript form is unknown, but that’s still quite the statement.

Nevertheless, following WorldCon’s physical cancellation, he made an interesting comment in a blog post just a week ago.

Martin wrote: “If there is a silver lining in these clouds, this will give me more time to finish WINDS OF WINTER.

“I continue to write every day, up here in my mountain fastness.”

That certainly is encouraging and suggests the author could well be on the home stretch.

With any luck, The Winds of Winter could be published by the end of the year.
