Manchester United are weighing up a move for Real Madrid star Gareth Bale as they look set to miss out on Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho as they cannot meet his £108million asking price.

Most of United’s efforts have been spent trying to convince Dortmund to lower their valuation of the England international.

Ed Woodward has ruled out spending nine figures on a single transfer, especially given how the Red Devils’ revenue streams have been hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic.

A list of alternative wingers has been drawn up and form Tottenham ace Bale has once again made the shortlist.

Sir Alex Ferguson attempted to sign the Welshman before he moved to the Bernabeu. His successor David Moyes also tried to hijack the move when he stepped into the Old Trafford hot seat.

A few years later Jose Mourinho failed in his attempts to bring Bale back to the Premier League.

“I know in the last day of the transfer window last year there was an offer from the Premier League,” he said.

“They offered €100m [£89m] and Real Madrid turned down that offer because they thought Bale would be a player in their side.

“I’m not allowed to say the name, though I do know the name of the club. I think at the end there was a disagreement as Madrid decided not to sell the player, because they thought he was a player who could be used and be in the starting line-up.”
