The state’s death figures and number of patients in hospital with he virus are still decreasing, Governor Andrew Cuomo said on Wednesday. “We once again have demonstrated that we’ve gone from the worst infection rate in the country to the best infection rate in the county,” Gov Cuomo said during his daily briefing.

Fewer than one percent of some 60,000 New York citizens tested on Tuesday have tested positive for the pathogen, he said.

The number of Covid-19 hospital admissions has fallen to 1,479 on Tuesday.

The current number of hospitalisations is the lowest since March 20.

The death toll has fallen to 17, the lowest figure since the pandemic started, he said.

It comes as Mr Cuomo revealed that he thinks New York City is ready to move to the second phase of lockdown easing on June 22.

“New York City will have been Phase 1 for 14 days. Look at all the numbers, all the numbers are good,” the governor said at his press conference Wednesday.

“Look at the number of tests, the positive tests, you look at it from the point of reopening, the numbers are good.

“Hospitalisations since reopening, the numbers are good, so New York City is on track to enter Phase 2 on Monday.”

He adde that other parts of the state were successful at containing the virus and authorised to move to phase 2.

“Employers, storeowners, employees, individuals, local governments have to be responsible and do their job,” he said.

However an hour earlier, at another press briefing, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio warned that “it may take another week or so” before the city could move into the second phase.

“We’re all mindful we had a very unique situation with the protests,” said Mr de Blasio.

He added that he expects the coronavirus data in the coming days to reflect how the protests have affected community spread, considering the disease has a two-week incubation period.
