On Tuesday the number of coronavirus fatalities in the US increased to more than 26,000. The number of confirmed infections has passed 600,000 in the country, with 26,500 new cases reported on Tuesday.

Deaths in New York, the hardest-hit state, near 11,000 having increased by 786 in just a day.

New York state is currently the epicentre of the outbreak in the US with more than 203,000 recorded cases.

Meanwhile, New York City announced 3,778 “probable” coronavirus deaths that could not be confirmed because no test was carried out.

The probable coronavirus-related deaths, announced on Tuesday, were registered between March 11 and April 13.

Post mortem analysis were often not executed in order to preserve testing resources.

Around 60 percent of the probable deaths occurred in hospitals, versus 90 percent for confirmed cases, according to city data.

Eighteen percent of the probable deaths were recorded in nursing homes, and 22 percent were in private residences, officials said.

The reports arise as lawmakers and health officials discuss when the US will reopen again.

The country’s lockdown restrictions are currently in place until April 30.

“It’s not going to be one size fits all,” the leading expert added.

Dr Fauci then said that before the lockdown gets lifted, each area must be able to quickly identify, isolate and treat any new cases to avoid another surge.

He said: “Minimum thing is you have got to be able to identify, isolate, get out of circulation and do adequate and appropriate contract tracing as new cases arrive,

“The real proof of success if how quickly you identify them… and you do contact tracing so you don’t have the beginning of a peak.”

Hours after indicating that the bipartisan concerns of governors about his leadership would cause an insurrection, Trump said he would let governors decide the right time and approach to reopen their states.

He added that he would probably discuss the procedures with governors on Thursday.

He said: “The governors are responsible, they have to take charge,

“The governors will be very, very respectful of the presidency.”

Democratic and Republican governors were alarmed when Trump claimed on Monday that he would decide when and how to reopen the country, even though he would be breaching constitutional limitations on federal powers.

Trump said on Tuesday he would be authorising governors “of each individual state to implement a reopening – and a very powerful reopening – plan of their state at a time and in a matter as most appropriate.”
