  • Luuk de Jong grabs his second of the evening with a beautiful curling header

SEVILLA 2-2 INTER MILAN

51: Sevilla midfielder Jordan clearly tugs back Nicolò Barella in the middle of the park. It’s a clear yellow but referee Danny Makkelie decides against booking him. A few strange decision from the official this evening.

48: Quite a cagey opening to the second half. Almost like both teams have realised they are playing in a major European final and not in the garden.

SEVILLA 2-2 INTER MILAN

45: PEEP! I think we’re all under the impression that this Luuk de Jong is the identical twin of the one that was at Newcastle. Must be. We’re back underway folks. More of the same please, lads!

SEVILLA 2-2 INTER MILAN

HT: Brilliant half. I trust you’ll be back in 15 minutes.

45: Ever Banega booked for a late sliding challenge on Lautaro Martínez to prevent the Argentine from streaking away. One minute of additional time… somehow.

43: Apparently Sevilla haven’t conceded a second-half goal in their last 12 games in all competitions. Might just be in Inter’s best interests to score one in the next few minutes then.

40: Three of the four goals tonight have been headers. And they’ve all been flippin’ emphatic. Nicolò Barella booked for a late challenge on Ever Banega. Crafty fox that lad.

37: Diego Godin, who scored in the 2016 Champions League final for Atlético, is the sixth player to score in both a European Cup/Champions League final and a UEFA Cup/Europa League final after Steven Gerrard, Hernan Crespo, Dmitri Alenichev, Allan Simonsen and Pedro.

SEVILLA 2-2 INTER MILAN | GODIN

36: GOAL! What. A. Final. Inter Milan have responded inside three minutes to level things up!

“We’ll attack, you attack, we’ll score, you score…” It’s breathless stuff. Uncompromising 34-year-old centre-back Diego Godin rises highest to head a free-kick beyond Sevilla goalkeeper Bono.

SEVILLA 2-1 INTER MILAN | DE JONG

33: GOAL! He’s done it again! Luuk de Jong has somehow become an unstoppable force and gives Sevilla the lead!

The Dutchman hadn’t scored in 12 games before his winner against Manchester United. This is an unbelievable header that curls into the top right-hand corner from Ever Banega’s free-kick.

31: Things have just flattened a touch after that breathless opening 25 minutes. Sevilla still knocking it around nicely and are shading it.

30: Half-hour gone and this is barmy. It’s entertaining. It’s annoying. The theatrics have been incessant. Tough to succinctly describe if I’m honest. I think I’m enjoying it.

28: Sevilla’s left-back Sergio Reguilon, who is on loan from Real Madrid, has been linked with various clubs this summer. And you can see why. He loves to attack and is making plenty of space for himself down that channel. Wolves, Everton and Chelsea are the interested Premier League clubs.

25: 12 minutes is the earliest both sides have scored in a UEFA Cup/Europa League final since 1990 when Fiorentina versus Juventus was 1-1 after only 10 minutes.

23: Pathetic. There’s some ridiculous antics going on here this evening. Players letting themselves down and trying to con the referee. Lautaro Martínez dives on the floor and expects a spot-kick. Should have been booked for his theatrics.

20: Booked! Not a player… it’s Antonio Conte. He’s shown a yellow card for persistent protesting on the sidelines and a verbal argument with Sevilla midfielder Ever Banega.

18: Inter Milan will rightly feel aggrieved that Diego Carlos is still on the field. There was no attempt to win the ball in the penalty incident and a straight red would have been right.

There’s a big palaver going on with Inter appealing for a penalty. It would have been harsh on Jules Kounde, whose arms were by his side. That doesn’t stop the Inter players from surrounding the referee and all hell breaking loose.

15: Very impressive from Sevilla. I know it was early but it would have been so easy for heads to go down. They’ve responded well and look in the ascendancy. Lucas Ocampos cuts inside before firing tamely straight at Samir Handanovic.

SEVILLA 1-1 INTER MILAN | DE JONG

12: GOAL! This is going to be a serious contest tonight. Sevilla are level less than ten minutes after falling behind.

The Spanish side stay calm and patient and get their reward. It’s quite simple really as Jesus Navas whips a cross into the penalty area where Luuk de Jong powers in a stooping header. Manager Julen Lopetegui will be thrilled with his decision to start him tonight.

11: Good to see Antonio Conte hasn’t change. At all. The Italian tactician has just been warned by the referee having lost his marbles over a seemingly innocuous incident on the field.

8: Romelu Lukaku has scored 34 goals this season in all competitions: the last Inter’ player to score as many goals in his first campaign for the Nerazzurri was Ronaldo in 1997/98.

7: Well if that’s how Sevilla are planning on defending tonight then this could be a cricket score. Although the Spaniards came from behind against Manchester United in the semi-final AND came from behind against Liverpool to win the competition a few years back.

SEVILLA 0-1 INTER MILAN | LUKAKU

4: GOAL! Romelu Lukaku makes no mistake with the penalty. That’s his 34th goal of his debut season for Inter Milan.

3: Penalty to Inter Milan! And it’s just about the clearest spot-kick you’ll see all season. Romelu Lukaku strides beyond Diego Carlos and into the penalty area. The Sevilla centre-back doesn’t bother trying to win the ball and rakes Lukaku’s calf. Should be a red, but he’s shown a merciful yellow instead.

2: Drama after about 30 seconds. Danilo D’Ambrosio looks to have put his elbow in the face of Sevilla left-back Sergio Reguilon but referee Danny Makkelie isn’t interested. The free-kick is just about hacked away.

SEVILLA 0-0 INTER MILAN

1: PEEP! And we’re underway in the Europa League final! It’s Spain vs Italy, it’s Julen Lopetegui vs Antonio Conte, it’s… well it’s a game of football for a very tidy trophy. I think Sevilla tonight myself, masters of the Europa League…

‘Important things’

Inter Milan manager Antonio Conte: “It’s been a positive season. We’ve done important things and have made major improvements.

“We’ve managed to get to the Europa League final, despite the small disappointment of not getting through the Champions League group stage.

“It has allowed us to have a much more successful journey in the Europa League than we would have had in the Champions League. I think this team – with a lot of young, inexperienced players – needed that.”

‘Great team’

Sevilla boss Julen Lopetegui: “This is a completely new and different team, with different players and a different manager.

“It helps that the club have reached this stage before, but I don’t think it’s an advantage for anybody.

“Two totally different teams are playing, and we are up against a great team.

“Inter are a team equipped to compete in the Champions League, given the calibre of players they have, which is extraordinary, and their very experienced manager who has coached many top teams.

“What I expect is a top-quality match which will demand the best of us. We will try to prepare well for it and have the answers for such a daunting challenge.”

Did you know…

Ashley Young is the first Englishman to start a UEFA European final for a non-British club since Owen Hargreaves started the 2001 Champions League final for Bayern Munich.

Of course you didn’t know that. Nor did I. But perhaps you’ll be able to use it as pub ammunition when the conversation is in short supply.

Team news

Nice and simple. Inter Milan boss Antonio Conte fields an unchanged starting XI from their emphatic five-goal thrashing of Shakhtar Donetsk.

Romelu Lukaku and Lautaro Martinez lead the line.

Sevilla boss Julen Lopetegui makes one change. Luuk de Jong is rewarded for his semi-final winner by replacing Youssef En-Nesyri.

Fixtures…

So there are, in fact, TWO Europa League fixtures this evening. Bet you didn’t know that…

Obviously we have the final between Sevilla and Inter Milan.

But there’s also the small matter of a preliminary qualifier between… Tre Penne vs Gjilani.

It’s the BIG one folks. The San Marino giants take on their Kosovo counterparts.

Evening…

Hello everyone and welcome to our LIVE coverage of Sevilla vs Inter Milan from Cologne.

Ok, it’s not the Europa League final we were expecting… but it’s football on a Friday night, so let’s just be thankful.

It’s Spain vs Italy while the sides from England lick their wounds and enjoy their various beach holidays.

… not everyone is enjoying their holidays of course… a certain Mr Maguire looks to be in a spot of bother over on the island of Mykonos.

Anyway, team news and line ups will be dropping shortly. Standby.
