The blackout struck at around 10.30am local time, and primarily affected eastern Paris, such as the 19th and 20th arrondissement. The municipalities of Lilas, Bagnolet and Montreuil also experienced a power outage. A whopping 117,000 customers were cut off from electricity, including at least 210,000 homes.

The power outage impacted public transport, especially the T4 line, which is expected to have delays until at least noon.

People quickly turned to Twitter to discuss the loss in power, with one person asking whether it was the “apocalypse”.

The user wrote: “Major power cut at home for 10min and I watch on Twitter and apparently it’s all Paris ?? Is this the apocalypse.”

Another person said: “My EDF colleague who tells me that it looks bad for the power outage and that in his opinion it may last a good half-day.”

The power has reportedly been switched back on, with one local saying the blackout lasted for over 20 minutes.

Enedis, a leading electricity company in France, told ActuParis: “This is an incident related to the transmission of electricity.”

They added: “We had a technical incident on an electrical station in eastern Paris at 10:17 am.

“Electricity was restored between ten and 20 minutes after the power cut.

“We apologize for the inconvenience.”
