MAN UTD 1-3 CHELSEA

92: The PA announcer at Wembley announces that Olivier Giroud has been awarded Man of the Match. Not quite sure whose benefit that’s for with nobody inside the stadium.

90: There will be SIX minutes added time as Pedro replaces Mason Mount for the final few minutes.

89: Since his debut for Man Utd in February, Bruno Fernandes has been directly involved in more goals in all competitions than any other Premier League player in this period (9 goals, 8 assists).

88: Yes, that consolation will only be a consolation. Chelsea are regained control and have Manchester United at arm’s length. Ruben Loftus-Cheek replaces Mateo Kovacic.

MAN UTD 1-3 CHELSEA | FERNANDES

85: GOAL! Bruno Fernandes scored Manchester United’s 19th penalty of the season. The Portuguese races back to the halfway line with the ball. But surely that’s just a consolation, right?

84: Penalty to Manchester United! Substitute Callum Hudson-Odoi clumsily kicks Anthony Martial inside the penalty area and Mike Dean has no qualms in pointing to the spot. Stonewall.

83: Well I feel stupid. I really did expect a Manchester derby in the final of the FA Cup and now we’ve got ourselves a London derby in 14 days.

80: Olivier Giroud and Willian head off for a well-earned rest as Callum Hudson-Odoi and Tammy Abraham get the last 10 minutes. Odion Ighalo and Timothy Fosu-Mensah on for Marcus Rashford and AWB.

78: Manchester United have just looked out of sorts today. But special mention to Jorginho and Mateo Kovacic. They’ve been tremendous in the middle of the park, breaking up play, protecting the defence and sparking attacks.

76: “Chelsea have been simply too good, they have been too strong. It has come off Harry Maguire, but even then, David De Gea isn’t doing anything to help him,” says Martin Keown.

MAN UTD 0-3 CHELSEA | MAGUIRE OG

74: GOAL! Chelsea are heading for an FA Cup final with Arsenal! Manchester United have been beaten up today.

Marcos Alonso drives down the left channel and pings a low cross into the six-yard box. Antonio Rudiger is still up from a previous corner and stabs at it but misses and Harry Maguire flicks it beyond David de Gea. Rudiger still claims it…

73: Paul Pogba grabs the first booking of tonight’s semi-final for a lunge on Mateo Kovacic. Congratulations to whoever had the Frenchman in their sweepstake.

70: “Chelsea fully deserve their two goal lead and they are looking the most likely to get another goal,” says Ashley Cole. I don’t think anyone would argue with that. Chelsea have been completely dominant today. Great tactics, great execution all over the park.

68: Drinks break! David de Gea trudges over to have a sip of water. Didn’t actually see any of his colleagues speak to him or go within a five-meter radius actually. Back underway.

66: Both of them are back on their feet and ready to attack/defend this Manchester United corner… close! Willy Caballero races off his line but is nowhere near the ball as Harry Maguire guides his header wide. Think Antonio Rudiger did just enough to put him off.

63: Another clash of heads. So many today. Antonio Rudiger challenges for a header but ploughs into the side of Mason Greenwood’s face. Both are down receiving treatment.

60: Manchester United need two unanswered goals in 30 minutes to force extra time. Chelsea still in control.

59: Chelsea going for the kill at Wembley. Olivier Giroud dummies Willian’s pass and Mason Mount clips it over from 16 yards. David de Gea then makes a decent stop to prevent Olivier Giroud’s deflected effort from making it 3-0.

56: Chance! Bruno Fernandes plays a corner back to Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who lofts a ball over to Harry Maguire. The centre-back is quite far and at an acute angle as his header is gathered by Willy Caballero.

54: And to think Ole Gunnar Solskjaer dropped cup competition goalkeeper Sergio Romero in favour of David de Gea.

Manchester United make a double change. Fred is replaced by Paul Pogba, while Mason Greenwood comes on for Daniel James.

51: Nearly a response. Marcus Rashford peels off his flank and accelerates away from the Chelsea defence. He’s at a tight angle but is inches from curling the ball in at the far post.

49: Somewhere in a darkened room Roy Keane feels justified. The former Manchester United icon isn’t the Spaniard’s biggest fan. Anyway, Mason Mount puts in a good ball from the left and Olivier Giroud is close to meeting it for number three.

MAN UTD 0-2 CHELSEA | MOUNT

46: GOAL! Goodness me… Chelsea have doubled their advantage at Wembley thanks to David de Gea… I mean… Mason Mount.

The Manchester United goalkeeper was partially responsible for the opener but he’s FULLY responsible for the second. Mount has a speculative drive from distance and the ball simply rolls through his fingers and into the net. Dean Henderson’s agent might just be fielding a few calls.

45: Peep! We’re underway folks. And just like Manchester City were yesterday, Manchester United came out early for the second half.

I said before the break that Olivier Giroud loves the FA Cup… Since his debut in the FA Cup in January 2013, Olivier Giroud has scored 16 goals in the competition – only Sergio Aguero (19) has netted more in this period. Specialist.

MAN UTD 0-1 CHELSEA

HT: Chelsea with a deserved one-goal advantage at the break.

MAN UTD 0-1 CHELSEA | GIROUD

45+11: GOAL! Olivier Giroud LOVES the FA Cup. Fact. The Frenchman is in the right place at the right time AGAIN to give Chelsea the lead.

The Manchester United defending and goalkeeping… isn’t great to put it kindly. Cesar Azpilicueta drives down the right channel and crosses to the near post. Giroud gets across Victor Lindelof with ease before flicking the ball through David de Gea. The Spaniard could have stopped it but the ball somehow squirms past him.

45+8: Penalty appeal! Manchester United want a spot-kick… but it’s not been given. Kurt Zouma clumsily kicks Anthony Martial, who had nipped in ahead of him. There’s definite contact but I’m not entirely convinced it’s inside the box. Play continues.

45+5: Eric Bailly is stretchered off wearing a neck brace and with an oxygen mask on. All the correct protocols were followed and the Manchester United star is expected to go to hospital. Two head injuries for Bailly in less than five minutes.

45+2: The game is still paused while Eric Bailly receives treatment. He refused the stretcher initially when he walked off the field but went down again and now he’s going to have to be stretchered off. He’s wearing a neck brace and medical staff are treating this very, very carefully indeed.

45: Concussion checks on Harry Maguire and Eric Bailly at Wembley after clash of heads. Maguire has gone full Butcher with a head bandage but Bailly won’t be able to continue.

Anthony Martial comes on to replace him. That should see United move to a to 4-2-3-1.

42: Olivier Giroud is sandwiched between Eric Bailly and Harry Maguire but slips away at the final second and the centre-back’s have a clash of heads. The pair are BOTH on the deck with the medical staff rushing onto the field.

Timothy Fosu-Mensah and Scott McTominay both warming up.

39: Corner to Chelsea as we approach the final five minutes of the first half. Reece James takes it… and it’s terrible again. The Blues DO manage to recycle it down the opposite flank as Kurt Zouma glances Mason Mount’s whipped cross over. Both Zouma and Eric Bailly stay down having collided during that opportunity.

37: He’s being targeted, isn’t he? Bruno Fernandes has been kicked a few times today and the latest came courtesy of Mateo Kovacic. Looks a bit far out for a shot but Marcus Rashford thought otherwise before thrashing it straight into the wall.

35: Everything but the cross. Willian breaks from deep inside the Manchester United half. The Brazilian runs the length of the field with United scrambling and has colleagues to aim at inside the box but floats his cross over everybody. Disappointing.

32: Could have been interesting. Bruno Fernandes went over to take that corner and played it in low for the arriving Nemanja Matic, who couldn’t quite pull the trigger.

30: Fred draws the foul from Mateo Kovacic and it’s in a lovely spot for a shot. Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford standing over it… save! Willy Caballero tips a Fernandes free-kick over the crossbar for a corner.

27: We had a drinks break around the 25-minute mark. I was too preoccupied telling you about the Fernandes thing.

Anyway, Harry Maguire takes the bait and brings down Olivier Giroud outside the box. He then punts the ball away and referee Mike Dean doesn’t book him. Kurt Zouma nearly meets the delivery at the far stick. Alas, he doesn’t.

24: Ouch! Oh boy… NEW BALLS PLEASE! Just seen why Bruno Fernandes is on the deck and it’s because the boot of Cesar Azpilicueta has caught him square in the… the gentleman’s region. The unmentionables. The downstairs area.

23: Blocked! Important stop from Harry Maguire, who knows very little about it as Mason Mount thumps an effort straight at him. It rolls behind for a corner, which… is… pretty appalling from Willian. Missed everyone.

Bruno Fernandes is down again. This is not good news.

20: Bruno Fernandes looks in pain. Jorginho went in late on the Portuguese a few moments ago and the midfielder is now moving gingerly.

Twenty minutes on the clock and Chelsea have been the dominant side. They are pressing as a unit and forcing Manchester United into silly mistakes. Moving the ball quickly too.

17: Chance! That’s GOT to be the breakthrough. Unbelievable. Cesar Azpilicueta is given all the time in the world to pick out Marcos Alonso at the far post. The Spaniard rises highest and somehow heads over the crossbar.

15: Not sure if you’re interested, but I’ve just seen that Tottenham beat Leicester 3-0 earlier with just 29% possession.

Tottenham had just 29.5% possession against Leicester, their lowest share in a Premier League game since September 2012 versus Manchester United (26%) and their lowest tally in a home game in the competition since we have such data (2003-04). Very Jose.

14: Nemanja Matic breathes a sigh of relief. He gifts the ball to Chelsea after some good pressing from Frank Lampard’s side but the Blues can’t carve a chance out.

11: I knew it wouldn’t be long before Mike Dean got involved. It never is. The referee, fully equipped with a beard these days, blocks Nemanja Matic and Chelsea are able to spread the ball wide to Reece James. He lets fly with a thunderbolt but David de Gea palms it away.

8: Boot off! Not words I often use. Mason Mount treads on the heel of Eric Bailly and the centre-back loses a boot. He looks in a bit of pain but soon recovers and Manchester United launch an attack. Daniel James is offside.

5: Well this has been a very patient start to proceedings. Not sure why, but I had expected break-neck speed from the first whistle. The Red Devils have shaded the possession statistics, knocking it around midfield and trying to stretch their opponents.

3: Oh joy… Mike Dean is tonight’s referee. Obviously that means if the match is low on entertainment he’ll provide us with some madness for the neutral to enjoy.

Both sides lining up with three at the back. Or five at the back. I never know what the proper term is. Daniel James right up front as a striker alongside Marcus Rashford.

MAN UTD 0-0 CHELSEA

1: Peep! And we’re underway at an empty Wembley folks. That’s Wembley Stadium – who have the PA system turned up to ridiculous volumes. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Frank Lampard do away with the ‘elbow tap’ and embrace as they walk out the tunnel.

Very proud – Lampard

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard said: “I’m very proud. It’s the semi-final of the FA Cup against Manchester United – it does not come any bigger. I’ve won here as a player but it doesn’t feel like it counts for much today. We know we have got a lot of work to do against a very good side but we are willing to give it a go.

“They are a very strong side and they have obvious threats in attacking areas, but my concern is what can we do. The couple of changes I have made, with Christian Pulisic dealing with an injury, I think it’s a team that can win the game.

“In the three games we have played against them this season, we have had more possession but you don’t win points with that. We are very aware of their threats and we have to defend well, but I want my team to believe in themselves.”

Frank explains

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard says Christian Pulisic isn’t starting due to a small injury.

Ole explains

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been discussing his team selection.

The Red Devils manager believes fresh legs coming on late in the game could make all the difference.

“They’ve played a lot of football so it’s about freshening up the team and also giving them of course a chance to make a difference when they come on,” Solskjaer said.

“There’s a chance for everyone of course. They’ve been waiting patiently, doing well when they have a chance, both Fred and James. Fresh legs giving us some of that intensity we need on a very big and draining Wembley pitch.”

Any other business?

Yes. Not a great deal of relevance to today’s semi-final but d’ya see Watford sacked Nigel Pearson with two games remaining?

The same Nigel Pearson who took over when the Hornets were rock-bottom with nine points from 16 games – six points off safety.

The Nigel Pearson who boasts the best win rate (35%) and points-per-game ratio (1.25) of any Watford manager in Premier League history.

Yeah, that Nigel Pearson.

Huddersfield also sacked Danny Cowley but I feel less passionately about that I’m afraid.

Arsenal…

Not quite sure what happened last night in all honesty.

In fact, I have no idea what to make of Arsenal at all these days. It looked like they’d turned the corner but that late defeat to Tottenham made me think otherwise.

Now they’ve beaten Premier League champions Liverpool and Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City in back-to-back fixtures to secure a place in the FA Cup final.

So… are they good again? Either way, whoever goes through this evening will certainly have a contest on their hands come the final on August 1.

Could be a good day…

For Manchester United. As I’ve already said, Leicester are trailing Tottenham 3-0 in north London. I guess it’s more understandable given three of Brendan Rodgers’ normal back four are absent.

Anyway, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side will move into fourth position on goal difference should Spurs win 4-0. I’ll let you know if that happens.

Twitter reaction

Rob: Slate Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for ‘overplaying’ his players, demand rotation and concentration on Champions League qualification and then complain that Daniel James is starting…

Kai: This game is tailor-made for Callum Hudson-Odoi today. But I’m so disappointed to see him on the bench. Better hope this doesn’t backfire on us.

Owen: Not a big fan of resting Anthony Martial given his current form. You don’t rest players for an FA Cup semi-final. That being said, I think that’s an XI more than capable of beating Chelsea (again). Come on the Reds!

History…

This will be the ninth meeting between Chelsea and Manchester United at Wembley Stadium (old and new), making it the most played club fixture at the ground in history.

Feel free to tell your friends, family or complete strangers that to sound smart and interesting.

Team news – Manchester United

OK… so FIVE changes for Manchester United. That, to me at least, indicates Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is more focused on securing a top-four finish.

Timothy Fosu-Mensah and Scott McTominay drop out of the starting XI who beat Crystal Palace. They are replaced by fit-again Brandon Williams and Nemanja Matic.

Elsewhere power trio Paul Pogba, Mason Greenwood and Anthony Martial are replaced by Fred, Daniel James and Eric Bailly.

Oh and a commiseration shout-out for cup competition goalkeeper Sergio Romero, who drops to the bench with David de Gea starting instead.

Team news – Chelsea

Frank Lampard makes three changes. Willy Caballero starts between the sticks ahead of Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Mason Mount and Reece James are recalled to the starting XI with Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Christian Pulisic on the substitutes bench.

Starting XI

Right… well this is unexpected. Paul Pogba, Mason Greenwood and Anthony Martial drop to the bench. Christian Pulisic is also amongst the substitutes for Chelsea. What’s going on, lads?!

Manchester United XI: De Gea, Wan-Bissaka, Lindelof, Maguire, Williams, Matic, Fred, Fernandes, James, Rashford.

Subs: Romero, Pogba, Mata, Martial, Pereira, Fosu-Mensah, Ighalo, Greenwood, McTominay.

Chelsea XI: Caballero, Rudiger, Alonso, Jorginho, Willian, Zouma, Kovacic, Giroud, Mount, James, Azpilicueta.

Subs: Kepa, Christensen, Abraham, Pedro, Loftus-Cheek, Hudson-Odoi, Pulisic, Tomori, Emerson.

We meet again…

And again, and again, and again…

This is the fourth-consecutive season that Manchester United and Chelsea have met in the FA Cup.

Manchester United won in the fifth round last season but the Blues collected victories in the quarter-final in 2016-17 and the final in 2017-18.

What’s on?

It’s been a bit of a staggered afternoon of football. Leeds, now champions of the Championship, beat Derby 3-1 presumably all nursing significant hangovers.

In the Premier League Southampton beat Bournemouth 2-0 at the Vitality Stadium. A result you think will see the Cherries relegated.

And in the battle for a top-four finish – Tottenham are battering Leicester. It’s 3-0 at the break with a brace from Harry Kane doing the damage.

Unless there’s some sort of miracle in the second half – that’s great news for both Manchester United and Chelsea.

Afternoon…

Hello everyone and welcome to our LIVE coverage of Manchester United vs Chelsea from Wembley.

Fine day for a FA Cup semi-final, don’t you think?

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Frank Lampard do battle for the honour and privilege of playing Arsenal in the grand final on August 1.

We’ll discuss just how the hell that happened in a little while.

Anyway, these bosses know a thing or two about the FA Cup. The Norwegian won it twice with the Red Devils and Lampard lifted it four times as one of Chelsea’s finest.

I suspect this could be a bit special. Standby for team news and line ups…

MAN UTD vs CHELSEA | TEAM NEWS

Manchester United will be without first-choice left-back Luke Shaw for today’s FA Cup semi-final.

The defender has failed to recover from an ankle problem picked up during the 2-2 draw with Southampton. However, Brandon Williams is fit and available.

N’Golo Kante will miss a fourth successive game for Chelsea because of a hamstring injury. Billy Gilmour is out for the remainder of the season following knee surgery.

Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer refused to confirm whether he would opt for cup competition regular Sergio Romero or David de Gea.

“The team is not selected yet. Jesse and Sergio both have a good chance of being involved,” the Norwegian said.
