When Kate joined the Royal Family, it wasn’t long before she started performing duties on behalf of the monarch.

As well as accompanying Prince William at events, the Duchess of Cambridge was often spotted with the Queen and Prince Philip.

While they all have a close relationship now, this may not always have been the case.

The royal might not have felt at ease straight away when with the Queen, body language expert Judi James said.

She told “Her first outings with the Queen showed some clear signals of anxiety and tension from Kate in between the smiles and moments of conversation, resulting in some rather rigid poses and tense facial expressions.

“Clearly keen to do everything right she sits and stands in a way that looks elegant but very self-conscious and the signature dimpled smile is missing.”

During her first few outings with the Queen, Kate was slightly self conscious and nervous, the expert suggested.

“She’s using her clutch bag as a shield and barrier, leaning forward slightly with both hands on top of it,” Judi continued.

“While the Queen appears to place her own bag on the floor and hold it with her arm close to Kate to minimise the distance between them, there’s no sign of the eye contact and chatting that we see between the pair now.”

The Duchess of Cambridge may have shown tension with the Queen, but she has looked much more relaxed with Prince Philip while at events in the past.

Judi explained: “Delightful poses suggest unexpectedly rich bonds between Kate and Prince Philip based on, not just affection, but also a shared sense of humour and fun.”

Although Kate is keen to impress and stick to royal protocol with the Queen, she has seemed more relaxed with Prince Philip.

Even with other members of the family around, Kate is happy to give her attention to Prince Philip.

The expert said: “Kate manages to control her two boisterous children with her hands while turning her head to pay full eye-attention to Philip.

“Her dimpled smile and softened eye expression show genuine affection but her fully opened-mouth laugh suggests she’s finding Philip’s comments genuinely hilarious.”

Still, the Duchess’ relationship with the Queen has changed over the years and the two have grown closer, according to Judi.

The mother-of-three has now developed a relaxed and friendly relationship with the Queen.

Judi added: “The body language signals between the Queen and Kate currently suggest a very relaxed, warm and relatively easy-going friendship with both women enjoying the other’s company.

“While the Queen always appears to affirm the fact that, despite her age, she is not in any need of support or aid, she often looks happiest when her granddaughter-in-law and future queen accompanies her or acts as co-host.

“Kate seems very adept at keeping a quiet eye on the Queen but without fussing.”
