The UN’s atomic watchdog head said: “The continue to enrich uranium, and to a much higher degree than they have committed themselves to. And this amount is growing by the month.” However, the International Atomic Energy Agency, IAEA, head Rafael Grossi speaking to Germany’s Die Presse said Iran does not have a “significant quantity” of uranium or plutonium to build a nuclear bomb.

In an interview published on the Die Presse website on Saturday, Mr Grossi discussed Iran’s “breakout time” for building a nuclear bomb.

The “breakout time” is the amount of time it takes for the correct amount of radioactive material to be made to create a nuclear bomb.

Mr Grossi said: “In the IAEA we do not talk about breakout time.

“We look at the significant quantity, the minimum amount of enriched uranium or plutonium needed to make an atomic bomb.

Iran does not have this significant quantity at the moment.”

However, Tehran has denied repeatedly that it has a nuclear weapons program.

They say their enrichment is for creating a nuclear energy infrastructure in the country.

The last IAEA report on Iran said it had 2,105.4 kg of enriched uranium.

This amount vastly exceeds the 202.8 kg limit set out in the 2015 nuclear deal with the United States and its Western allies.

Iran signed the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action in 2015 to limit its enrichment of nuclear material, but the US, under Donald Trump, pulled out of this agreement in 2018.

The report also said Iran had enriched uranium with only 4.5 percent purity.

For weapons-grade uranium, the rate of enrichment must be at least 90 percent.

In January, speaking to state television in Iran President Hassan Rouhani said: “We are enriching more uranium before the deal was reached.

“Pressure has increased on Iran but we continue to progress.

“We have no limits on the nuclear file, and we are increasing enrichment every day”.
