Hollywood lost one of its greatest actors today as the news was announced that Sir Ian Holm CBE had passed away this morning. Holm was well known for his appearances on and off screen as a talented theatre, television and film actor. The versatile star was loved for his roles in Alien, The Lord of the Rings and Chariots of Fire.

The actor’s agent confirmed the news in a statement, saying: “It is with great sadness we can confirm that the actor Sir Ian Holm CBE passed away this morning at the age of 88.”

“He died peacefully in hospital with his family and carer,” he added. “Charming, kind and ferociously talented, we will miss him hugely.”

The agent confirmed that his death was Parkinson’s related, though he was treated for prostate cancer in 2001.

The beloved star leaves behind his fourth wife, Sophie de Stempel, and five children.

The Essex-born star had been a household name for decades thanks to his award-winning performances in everything from playing Pod alongside his previous wife Penelope Wilton in a BBC adaptation of The Borrowers, to his iconic part in Alien.

“I’m never the same twice,” he told the Los Angeles Times back in 2000. “I’m not a movie star-type, so people don’t demand that I’m always the same.”

The star’s final days were documented by his wife Sophie, an artist, in beautiful portraits on her Instagram page.

She also shared a snap of the actor sitting outside in a garden on a sunny day, from behind, saying it was taken ten days before.

The artist had also been posting photos of some of his performances, often without a caption.

However, she also shared the sad news with a memorable photo of Ian in an old Observer paper, with the caption: “With great sadness the wonderful lan Holm died today.”

Fans and followers posted their condolences on his wife’s Instagram page as they heard the news.

Singer Nineh Cherry wrote: “Dear Sophie my heart is with you xxxx.”

Tributes have been flooding in for the 88-year-old star who had been suffering with ill health for a number of years.

BAFTA tweeted their condolences as they shared a photo of Holm winning one of its prestigious awards.

“We are very sorry to hear of the death of Ian Holm. Nominated for 6 BAFTAs in his wide-ranging and successful career across TV and film, he is pictured here winning the Supporting Actor award for his role in Chariots Of Fire in 1981,” they wrote.

Comedian Eddie Izzard also shared his sadness at hearing the news, posting: “The great Ian Holm is dead. Wonderful actor and it’s so sad to see him go. Farewell, you did great work Sir.”

Social media users also shared how they were terrified of his character in the 1979 sci-fi flick Alien, but many were saddened by the loss of such a talented star.
