There are few things viewers of the hugely divisive final seasons of the show can agree on. After endless torment (some of it her own fault) Ned Stark’s eldest daughter finally had the ending she deserved. In a season which detonated the previously unanimous acclaim and fan adoration, everybody was happy to see her sitting enthroned at Winterfell as Queen of the North. But now author and creator of all things Westeros, George RR Martin, has revealed Sansa’s story will be very different in the remaining two books.

A new book, Fire Cannot Kill A Dragon, goes behind the scenes of the creation of the eight seasons of Game of Thrones on HBO and includes frank interviews with the author.

Martin has already spoken out aginst the early wedding night scenes between Daenerys and Drogo, which entirely changed what he had written in the first book.

He also conformed categorically who will end on the Iron Throne.

And now he has described the changes readers will see in Sansa’s journey, criticising the way the HBO showrunners completely misunderstood one of the most popular characters.

Martin said: “My Littlefinger would have never turned Sansa over to Ramsay. Never.

“He’s obsessed with her. Half the time he thinks she’s the daughter he never had — that he wishes he had, if he’d married Catelyn. And half the time he thinks she is Catelyn, and he wants her for himself.”

“He’s not going to give her to somebody who would do bad things to her.

“That’s going to be very different in the books,”

In the books, Sansa is still in The Vale, where Littlefinger is planning to marry her to Harry Hardying. He has given the Boltons a false Stark – Sansa’s childhood friend Jeyne Poole, disguised as Arya.

Martin said: “Not having Jeyne, they used Sansa for that. Is that better or worse? You can make your decision there. Oddly, I never got pushback for that in the book because nobody cared about Jeyne Poole that much. They care about Sansa.”
