CHELSEA 0-0 NORWICH

30: Half-hour gone and Chelsea are just struggling to inject any urgency into their performance.

What?! Cesar Azpilicueta drills the ball back to an unmarked Olivier Giroud, who completely shanks it from ten yards out. Should really have tested Tim Krul.

27: Nice move. Kurt Zouma heeds my advice by prowling forward and slipping it through to Marcos Alonso, who cuts the ball back for Christian Pulisic to fire into the side-netting.

24: It’s a breezy 18 degrees. You know what that means… drinks break!

23: Close! Jorginho clips a lofted pass over the top of the Norwich defence where Olivier Giroud collects. He looks to lob Tim Krul but looks caught in two minds and simply nudges the ball to the goalkeeper via his shin.

Can someone fetch Hakim Ziyech a tablet to watch EastEnders?

21: All very patient stuff from Chelsea. They aren’t afraid of sending it back to Kurt Zouma and Antonio Rudiger to rebuild their attacks. Perhaps one of those two should be prepared to run the ball an extra few yards forward to pull that Norwich defence out.

18: Oh… they have had a chance! Jamal Lewis gets down the left channel and he’s got a fair few to aim at. The ball is whipped into the penalty area where Todd Cantwell arrives a fraction too late to test Kepa Arrizabalaga.

13: Well it’s going to be a long night for the Canaries. They have seen 27% possession and are camped inside their own half.

10: Did I mention that I’ve made Cesar Azpilicueta my fantasy football captain this week? Yep… so that’s a death sentence for Chelsea. Apologies.

So what do we think about Norwich’s continual playing out from the back? Personally, I can’t stand it. It’s worked against them on so many occasions this season with multiple mistakes gifting goals. I’m very much of the school of ‘ave it’ when necessary.

8: Marcos Alonso now sends in an equally teasing cross from the left flank but neither Willian nor Olivier Giroud can make a connection. Having started well for those three initial minutes… Norwich are being swamped. It’s been all Chelsea.

5: Close! Cesar Azpilicueta whips a decent cross in from the right channel where Ruben Loftus-Cheek stoops to glance the ball into the side-netting. Tim Krul would have been disappointed to see that beat him at his near post.

3: I assume you watched Chelsea’s clash with Sheffield United on Saturday. Just a dreadful performance. Frank Lampard will be expecting a BIG response this evening after a fortunate reprieve. He’s looking very focused inside his technical area. Perhaps a tinge of anger in there too.

Norwich have started brightly. Yellow shirts buzzing around in Chelsea territory.

CHELSEA 0-0 NORWICH

1: PEEP! Aaaaaand we’re underway at Stamford Bridge. Should be a foregone conclusion tonight, but as we know, being in an advantageous position often has a habit of making things tricky. Just look at Leicester.

Hello Hakim…

We have a special guest tonight, folks. It’s only blimin’ Hakim Ziyech! The Morocco international, who Chelsea signed from Ajax for £38million, is at Stamford Bridge to watch the action.

Looks thrilled.

I’ve got the answers

Well I’m glad somebody does. Frank Lampard has responded (or HIT BACK if you like a bit of sensationalism) to criticisms about his sides defensive performances.

The Blues have conceded a combined seven goals against West Ham, Crystal Palace and Sheffield United over the past weeks and attention, quite rightly, has turned to the back four.

“In terms of defensively, there is a way that I want us to play and it’s not gung-ho, it’s not crazy” said Lampard.

“A lot of the goals are the balls that come into our box that maybe we don’t defend right at that moment and that’s something that has to improve and I feel I know the answers to it.

“Some of it is work and that’s something we will see and it’s part of the process we are in. I don’t like it, I hate conceding goals but we have to work harder on it.”

I’ll tell Roman Abramovich it’s sorted then.

Latest

I see Middlesbrough have taken the lead against Reading with just under ten minutes remaining.

Can you imagine the scenes when manager Neil Warnock gets back into the dressing room and sees that their relegation rivals have been pumped 8-0?

I’d pay cash money to see his reaction.

It’s eight

Wigan now lead Hull 8-0. Yes, EIGHT-NIL.

Wigan are the first team to score 8+ goals at home in a single match in the English second tier since Manchester City in November 1987 (10-1 v Huddersfield). Still 25 minutes left on the clock…

Looking ahead…

Ok, this is going to be convoluted. Stick with me.

Chelsea are in third position – one points above Leicester and Manchester United. A victory tonight will make that a four-point advantage with two fixtures remaining.

It looks good from that perspective but Frank Lampard’s final two fixtures are against Liverpool (a) and Wolves (H). Yep, tricky.

But the pendulum swings again when you learn that the Foxes and United are playing each other on the last day of the season.

Two more wins guarantees Champions League football.

Norwich? Relegated mate.

Twitter reaction

Alex: Loftus-Cheek starts! Kovacic & Jorginho reunited in XI. Looks like Lampard is taking the short term approach, knowing that w/o Kante & Gilmour he just can’t do the 4-3-3 w/ two attacking 8’s. Going back to a partnership that’s worked between Kova & Jorginho.

Tim: Respect to Manchester United for going on an 18 match unbeaten run which helped them jump from a massive 5th to 5th in the table.

Kyle: Remember when people said Frank Lampard would never drop Mason Mount because its his boy, theres your proof Frank will drop anyone whenever he pleases!

Very good, Tim. Got a chuckle out of me.

Team news – Chelsea

Frank Lampard has made FIVE changes to the side who were beaten by Sheffield United.

It’s perhaps not a surprise to see Olivier Giroud drafted back into the starting XI. He replaces Tammy Abraham in attack.

Antonio Rudiger is also brought back in for Andreas Christensen and will partner Kurt Zouma at the back.

Marcos Alonso, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Mateo Kovacic also start. Reece James, Ross Barkley and Mason Mount are substitutes.

Team news – Norwich

Daniel Farke makes four changes.

The defeat at West Ham was pretty atrocious and that’s seen Emiliano Buendia, Marco Stiepermann, Mario Vrancic and Teemu Pukki drop out of the starting XI.

Todd Cantwell, Lukas Rupp, Kenny McLean and Josip Drmic start.

Right…

So what is going on in this race for Champions League football? Nobody seems to want it.

Having been pumped 3-0 by Sheffield United on Saturday – things were looking bleak for Chelsea. However, the following days will have made Frank Lampard feel rather better.

Leicester were hammered by relegation-threatened Bournemouth and then Manchester United conceded a 96th-minute equaliser against Southampton.

So what does it all mean? Well it means that Chelsea are back in the driving seat with three fixtures remaining. There’s obviously catch… but I’ll discuss that in a moment for dramatic effect.

Starting XI

Here we go! The team news arrives on my desk and there’s a few… interesting… changes with Mason Mount, Ross Barkley and Reece James all benched. Todd Cantwell starts for the Canaries. Full analysis coming up.

Chelsea XI: Kepa, Alonso, Azpilicueta, Rudiger, Zouma, Jorginho, Kovavic, Willian, Loftus-Cheek, Pulisic, Giroud.

Subs: Caballero, Christensen, Barkley, Abraham, Pedro, Mount, Hudson-Odoi, James, Tomori.

Norwich XI: Krul, Aarons, Lewis, Godfrey, Klose, McLean, Tettey, Rupp, Cantwell, Hernandez, Drmic.

Subs: McGovern, Vrancic, Bundia, Stiepermann, Trybull, Pukki, Idah, Thomas, Martin.

What’s on?

This is the only top-flight ticket in town, folks. But there are seven Championship fixtures taking place as we speak.

West Brom and Fulham shared a goalless draw BUT the real story is Wigan.

The Latics are winning… wait for it… they are winning… 7-0 against Hull and it’s only half time. Yes, SEVEN-NIL.

Funny what can be achieved with that siege mentality with the threat of a 12-point deduction hanging over you.

Evening…

Hello everyone and welcome to our LIVE coverage of Chelsea vs Norwich from Stamford Bridge.

So what happened to the sun?

Last I checked it was July and it shouldn’t be this dark. If we were playing cricket then the umpires would stop play for bad light.

Weather aside, we’ve got the first in another round of Premier League fixtures tonight as Frank Lampard’s take on the relegated Canaries.

The Blues were handed a giant slice of good fortune last night – can they capitalise? Time to strike. Team news and line ups coming shortly.
