ASTON VILLA 1-2 CHELSEA

FT: Chelsea collect maximum points at Villa Park! The victory gives Frank Lampard’s side a handy five-point cushion over Manchester United and Wolves in their pursuit of Champions League qualification. As for Aston Villa, well, time is running out for the 19th-placed side.

Time for the Merseyside derby – you can join me by clicking this link HERE.

94: Silly boys. Jack Grealish and N’Golo Kante are booked within 60 seconds for separate incidents. Frustration setting in for the Villa midfielder who, in fairness, has been fouled a lot today.

92: Precious time ticking away and still Chelsea lead. No sign of a late equaliser I’m afraid Villa fans. Frank Lampard’s side have had all the ball.

90: Reece James heads on for Chelsea. He arrives just as the fourth official signals there will be an additional FIVE minutes of stoppage time. Room for late drama…

88: Close! That might have been Villa’s chance. Jota, who’s just come on, latches on to a Samatta pass and fires inches past the far post.

85: Just seen the starting XI’s for the Merseyside derby. Anthony Gordon in for Everton, Mohamed Salah out for Liverpool. Very, very interesting indeed.

82: Not entirely sure how N’Golo Kante has avoided a booking for obviously fouling Jack Grealish. Douglas Luiz takes the resulting free-kick that’s easily dealt with.

79: It’s looking quite difficult to see how the hosts can get back into this. They can’t get the ball as Tammy Abraham replaces Olivier Giroud. Should the result remain the same – Chelsea will move five points clear of Manchester United and Wolves. Nice little cushion.

76: Chelsea doing well to manage this. Just passing the ball around the back and keeping it away from desperate Villa toes. It looks like hard work for the hosts out there.

73: It doesn’t get any easier for Dean Smith’s men. In fact, it gets way header. Aston Villa’s next four games are Newcastle, Wolves, Liverpool, Manchester United. Good luck with that.

70: Close! Hourihane sweeps a nice free-kick into the danger area but centre-back Hause couldn’t direct it on target. A few questions in the Chelsea defence as to how he was given such a clear path. Time for the drinks break.

68: Olivier Giroud has now scored in each of his last six Premier League appearances against Aston Villa (8 goals), with this his first match against them since netting a hat-trick for Arsenal in May 2016. Villainous.

65: Aston Villa are back down in 19th in the table now. Where on earth do they start to turn this back around then?

ASTON VILLA 1-2 CHELSEA | GIROUD

62: GOAL! All change please, all change. Chelsea have completed the turnaround inside two minutes at Villa Park!

Aston Villa looked so compact and resilient for so long but have completely crumbled. Again it’s assist-king Cesar Azpilicueta who crosses the ball for Olivier Giroud to collect, spin and fire in via a deflection.

ASTON VILLA 1-1 CHELSEA | PULISIC

61: GOAL! Well Christian Pulisic didn’t take long to make his presence known!

The US International hops off the bench and calmly converts on the half-volley from a beautiful Cesar Azpilicueta delivery from the right channel. Looked simple but he HAD to keep his concentration. Nice finish.

60: Don’t ask me why – but I quite like that Aston Villa manager Dean Smith is watching his side from higher up in the stadium. Surely it makes sense that you can see what’s happening better from up there? Surprised more don’t do it.

Anyway, Olivier Giroud just misses a ball fizzed across the penalty box.

59: Mbwana Samatta replaces Keinan Davis. I like this Samatta lad.

56: Frank’s seen enough. He’s bringing on the cavalry. Ross Barkley and Christian Pulisic are not entering the action, replacing Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Mateo Kovacic.

53: Aston Villa will be mainly defending in this half. The Villains are deep, compact and rigid. They could perhaps be buoyed by the fact Chelsea aren’t really masters of the turnaround. They’ve only won one of the nine games they’ve conceded first in. They lost the other eight.

50: Chelsea see two successive corners cleared away with a minimum of fuss. Willian’s second delivery was one of the worst in recorded history. Fact.

48: Frank Lampard has resisted the urge to make any changes over the break. Although with FIVE substitutions at his disposal – I would expect to see Tammy Abraham, Pedro, Christian Pulisic and co introduced at some point.

Wow. Just looking at that bench and it’s stacked. Chelsea subs: Caballero, James, Zouma, Emerson, Gilmour, Barkley, Pulisic, Pedro, Abraham.

ASTON VILLA 1-0 CHELSEA

45: And we’re back underway. Just imagine having 76% possession, nine shots and still going in behind. Well Frank Lampard doesn’t have to imagine.

Make no mistake – this second-half will have a huge impact on both ends of the Premier League table. Defeat would see Manchester United stay just two points behind the Blues with eight games remaining.

Also, I got the table wrong earlier. A win for Dean Smith’s side moves them into 16th position and sends West Ham into the relegation zone. Big.

ASTON VILLA 1-0 CHELSEA

HT: Marcos Alonso sees his superb volley deflected wide just before the break. Mateo Kovacic also volleyed wide. Aston Villa have a precious one-goal advantage at the break courtesy of defender Kortney Hause. If things remain the same then Dean Smith’s side will be level on points with 17th-placed West Ham.

ASTON VILLA 1-0 CHELSEA | HAUSE

44: GOAL! Sorry, what?! Talk about smash ‘n’ grab! Aston Villa have taken the lead thanks to Kortney Hause.

The hosts have only had 24% possession but the scoreline is all that matters. Douglas Luiz collects the ball from Jack Grealish and crosses in deep for centre-back Hause to scramble over the line after Kepa’s initial save.

43: Nice shimmying from Mason Mount. Is ‘shimmying’ a word? Who cares. The Chelsea talent makes a yard before whipping a cross across the box but Ruben Loftus-Cheek arrives a fraction too late for a tap-in.

40: Well it looks like this match is going to same way most of the others have since the Premier League restart. Quite a bit of huff and puff but there’s a lack of quality in the final third. Heading for a goalless first half – which would be quite a result for the hosts.

38: Big chance. Big chance for Aston Villa. El Ghazi is key again as he whips in the cross, with John McGinn connecting at the near post but not able to direct his effort on target.

36: Anwar El Ghazi hits one from outside the box but Kepa Arrizabalaga saves low to his right. Nicely hit.

35: Orjan Nyland… how much longer will Dean Smith continue with him between the sticks. He’s just fluffed an effort from Mateo Kovacic and the ball nearly spun over the line. Doesn’t inspire much confidence.

33: Willian blazes a dangerous cross through the penalty area but there’s nobody in a black shirt prepared to take a gamble at the near post. It feels like a matter of when and not if Chelsea will take the lead. This is just so one-sided.

30: Chelsea are still bossing the possession statistics. Aston Villa have dropped extremely deep and are staying compact. I’d imagine that’ll be the plan until the final 10 or 15 minutes before letting the handball off. Can’t help but feel the hosts have to be more ambitious – a point simply isn’t enough at this stage of the season.

27: “The sprinklers going off mid-game is the most Match of the Day 2 “2 Good, 2 Bad” moment possible,” says Adam Hurrey. He’s not wrong.

24: Ah… time for one of those new drinks breaks the Premier League have decided to introduce. Nicely times at 23:00 to halt any momentum building.

Just while there is a pause in play – who is next on the Chelsea hit list? Two are already through the door but Frank Lampard is supposedly intent on solving his left-back problem. Is Ben Chilwell worth the £80million I’ve seen quoted?

21: Save! Chelsea’s best effort falls to the feet of Mason Mount, who unleashes a terrific swerving effort that Orjan Nyland keeps out.

18: Either my iPad is broken or there’s something wrong with the sound in this coverage. It sounds like I’m listening to the commentary through a cup and a string. Not necessarily a complaint – bringing back some nostalgic memories.

15: Davis continues to impress with a mazy run forward, taking on Marcos Alonso and Mateo Kovacic over on Villa’s right channel. He backheels it smartly to John McGinn, who is fouled.

13: Chelsea are knocking it around midfield without causing Villa’s defence any significant issues. Mateo Kovacic then wastes the attack by smashing the cross clean out of play.

10: Willian embarks on a signature run forward but his low, driven effort is blocked before Nyland has the chance to take it behind the line and throw it back out again…

7: Not seen that before. The sprinklers were accidentally (presumably) switched on during play. I know it’s June but seriously lads!

5: Chelsea aren’t hanging about. The Blues are driving forward with purpose and tempo in these opening five minutes. Willian is looking sharp, same for Ruben Loftus-Cheek. The midfielder beats Ezri Konsa with a stooping header but guides it miles wide.

2: Hard not to be impressed with 22-year-old Keinan Davis. He threw himself about and created a fair few chances against Sheffield United on Wednesday. He’s straight into the action again when drawing a free-kick from Antonio Rudiger.

Crucial that Aston Villa makes these set-pieces count… and they wasted it. Sinful.

ASTON VILLA 0-0 CHELSEA

1: After a minute’s silence followed by players and officials taking the knee, Aston Villa get us under way at Villa Park. Predictions? I know Villa have already played a competitive game under these conditions but Chelsea should have enough to collect maximum points.

Exciting times at Stamford Bridge

How exciting it must be to support Chelsea at the moment?

They are in the driving seat when it comes to that all-important fourth Champions League position. They have a young manager and players growing in confidence with every game AND they’ve bagged two blockbuster signings already!

Ajax’s Hakim Ziyech and RB Leipzig star Timo Werner are already through the door and there’s no sign of the recruitment drive slowing down. Heady times indeed.

All done

Newcastle have beaten Sheffield United 3-0 and the result lifts them to 12th in the Premier League table. Steve Bruce’s side now have 38 points and are probably safe from relegation. The Blades stay in seventh – but their hopes of European qualification have taken a significant knock this week.

Well I never…

I don’t think anybody saw this coming. Newcastle are now beating Sheffield United 3-0 at St James’ Park. And if that’s not stunning enough – Joelinton has actually scored a goal! The £40m signing gets his second Premier League goal in 30 appearances.

D’ya know who the other was against? *Pauses for dramatic effect* It was Tottenham…

Twitter round-up

Chester: Proper intrigued to see N’Golo Kante in a pivot. One thing I rate about Frank Lampard is he seems to be challenging his own assumptions about whether Tammy Abraham should be first-choice and Kante should never play anchor. Agree or disagree I like having an open manager.

Cameron: He really doesn’t learn does he? El Ghazi has not been pulling his weight even though he claims he’s fitter, and Dean Smith is still reluctant to play 2 up top.

Henrule: Mason Mount as a number 10. You can see the love both the club and Frank Lampard is showing on him. That’s a strong indication he will start every game. He might even be given the number 10 shirt next season. Yes number 10 jersey for Mount. I said it first.

Alan: Chelsea have gone with experience today. Let’s hope it proves to be the correct decision. No doubt all five substitutes will be used.

You certainly did, Henrule. And that’s mainly because nobody else has bothered discussing it.

Ritchie makes it two

Newcastle look to have wrapped up the points against 10-man Sheffield United at St James’ Park. Matt Ritchie smacked in the second just after Allan Saint-Maximin opened the scoring to make it 2-0 to Steve Bruce’s side.

The Blades will want to forget this week. They were on the receiving end of a terrible decision against Aston Villa on Wednesday and today’s second booking for John Egan was ridiculous.

Team news – Chelsea

And for the Blues, Frank Lampard has made four changes from the team who knocked four past Everton all those weeks ago.

Olivier Giroud is preferred to Tammy Abraham in attack. Perhaps one last hurrah before Timo Werner arrives to assume his central role next season.

There’s a return for Ruben Loftus-Cheek, who makes his firsts tart since May 2019 after suffering that horrendous achilles injury. He’s in for Billy Gilmour.

Midfielder N’Golo Kante is also back in the starting XI to replace Ross Barkley. Mateo Kovacic is back too while Andreas Christensen is preferred to Kurt Zouma.

Team news – Aston Villa

Nice and simple for Aston Villa boss Dean Smith this afternoon. He’s named an unchanged side from Wednesday’s rather fortunate goalless draw with Sheffield United.

That means Jack Grealish, John McGinn and 22-year-old striker Keinan Davis all start.

Starting XI…

And the line-ups arrive. Frank Lampard starts Olivier Giroud in attack with Tammy Abraham on the bench. John McGinn in the starting XI for the hosts.

Chelsea XI: Kepa, Azpilicueta, Christensen, Rudiger, Alonso, Kante, Loftus-Cheek, Kovacic, Willian, Giroud, Mount.

Subs: Caballero, James, Zouma, Emerson, Gilmour, Barkley, Pulisic, Pedro, Abraham.

Aston Villa XI: Nyland, Hause, Konsa, Mings, Targett, Luiz, McGinn, Hourihane, El Ghazi, Davis, Grealish.

Subs: Reina, Taylor, Elmohamady, Nakamba, Vassilev, Jota, Trezeguet, Baston, Samatta.

The latest

It’s still goalless between Newcastle and Sheffield United at St James’ Park. What else did you expect?

There’s been relatively few chances to speak of but £40m Joelinton, whose agent must be laughing his head off, missed a golden opportunity in the first half.

Oh, and John Egan has just been sent off for bringing down Joelinton. I brought him into my Fantasy Football team this week – so I’ll take full responsibility for that.

Is there anything more pointless than being sent off for preventing Joelinton getting a run on goal?

Afternoon…

Hello everyone and welcome to our LIVE coverage of Aston Villa vs Chelsea.

We’re being treated to a triple-header today as the Premier League goes into overdrive to complete the season.

The fixture at Villa Park is sandwiched between Sheffield United’s trip to Newcastle and the Merseyside derby between Everton and Liverpool.

That’ll be a quiet night in at the library – not! Oh right… there’s no fans in the stadium… So maybe it will.

Anyway, we have a veritable feast of football on the menu so let’s get cracking. Team news and line-ups on the way…

ASTON VILLA vs CHELSEA – TEAM NEWS

Frank Lampard has a major selection headache ahead of his Chelsea side’s return to Premier League action against Aston Villa this weekend.

The Blues have been boosted by the return to fitness of several key players, although there are doubts around two younger members of the squad.

Reece James suffered a knock in training and missed an in-house friendly last month, although he did feature in a recent 7-1 win over Queens Park Rangers.

The right-back should be in contention to feature this weekend but there are bigger question marks over Callum Hudson-Odoi.

Jorginho is the only player who will definitely miss out at Villa Park as the Italian serves the final match of a two-game ban.

Aston Villa head coach Dean Smith remains without injured defenders Bjorn Engels and Frederic Guilbert.
